Drooping eyelids or under-eye bags can make you look tired. Eyelid surgery can address excess skin and bulging fat. Together, we assess the approach that suits your eyes.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is tailored to your skin, fat distribution and eyelid position. The aim is a natural result while preserving proper eyelid closure.
Upper eyelid surgery
For excess skin that hangs over the natural eyelid crease, sometimes reaching the eyelashes. This can create a heavy feeling and, in some cases, restrict the field of vision.
The surgeon carefully removes excess skin and, if necessary, a limited amount of fat. The scar lies mainly within the eyelid crease.
Lower eyelid surgery
For bags caused by bulging fat, sometimes combined with loose skin. Depending on your anatomy, fat is repositioned or partially removed and the skin is corrected if necessary.
The incision is placed just below the eyelashes or inside the eyelid. Additional support for the lower eyelid is sometimes needed.
A low eyebrow or a drooping eyelid margin (ptosis) may require a different correction. That is why we assess the entire eye area, not just the excess skin.
From consultation to aftercareWhat happens during eyelid surgery?
The technique, anaesthesia, expected outcome and aftercare are explained beforehand. There is time to ask questions and make your decision at your own pace.
Discussing your wishes and examining your eyes
The surgeon examines your eyelids and discusses your health, medication and previous eye treatments. Also mention dry eyes, contact lenses or thyroid problems.
Preparing for surgery
You receive individual instructions about smoking, medication and fasting if required. Never stop blood-thinning medication on your own initiative. Arrange transport home.
The correction
After marking the eyelids, anaesthesia is administered. Upper eyelid surgery is often performed under local anaesthesia; a different form of anaesthesia may be appropriate for a more extensive procedure. The surgeon corrects the tissue and carefully closes the incisions.
Going home and follow-up
You usually go home the same day. You receive aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment. Non-dissolvable stitches are generally removed after about a week, as advised by your surgeon.
What can you expect during recovery?
Swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness are normal initially. Your eyes may temporarily feel dry, sensitive or watery. Recovery varies from person to person and according to the technique used.
The first few days
Rest, keep your head slightly elevated and apply cold compresses as instructed. Do not rub your eyes. Use prescribed eye drops or ointment as directed.
Around 10–14 days
Many people return to social activities or desk work. Bruising and swelling may still be visible; these can last longer after lower eyelid surgery.
The following months
Residual swelling continues to settle and scars gradually become softer and less noticeable. The result can only be properly assessed once the tissues have settled.
Resume exercise, heavy lifting, make-up, contact lenses and driving in consultation with your surgeon. Protect the eye area from the sun. Allow enough recovery time before an important event.

Will dark circles and crow’s feet disappear too?
Not necessarily. Dark circles can be related to pigmentation, thin skin, shadows or volume loss. Surgery mainly corrects excess skin and fat bags. It does not automatically remove crow’s feet or pigmentation.
When are laser treatments or fillers an alternative?
For fine lines or mild skin laxity, a SmoothEye laser treatment may be considered. It does not replace surgery for significant excess skin or pronounced fat bags.
A volume treatment may sometimes be appropriate for a hollow tear trough. Fillers are not a universal solution for bags or dark circles: the doctor first assesses the cause and your suitability. This sensitive area has specific risks, including prolonged swelling and rare serious vascular complications.
What are the risks?
Possible complications include postoperative bleeding, infection, noticeable scars, asymmetry, persistent dry eyes or difficulty closing the eyes. The position of the lower eyelids may change. An additional correction is sometimes needed. Serious damage to vision is very rare.
After surgery, contact your surgeon or the emergency department immediately if you experience a sudden reduction in vision, severe eye pain or rapidly increasing swelling. Do not wait for your scheduled follow-up.
How long will the result last?
The effect can remain visible for years, but natural ageing continues. Skin quality, genetics and lifestyle influence the result. Perfect symmetry or a permanently unchanged result cannot be guaranteed.
