Rhinoplasty
A refined change that respects your facial features, natural proportions and—where necessary—your breathing.
A nose that suits your face
Rhinoplasty changes the shape, proportions and sometimes the function of the nose. The aim is not a ‘standard nose’, but a balanced and natural result that suits you.
- Soften a prominent bridge or hump
- Refine a wide, drooping or bulbous nasal tip
- Adjust the length, width or position of the nose
- Bring the nasal wings or nostrils into better proportion
- Correct asymmetry caused by anatomy or trauma
- Assess and, where appropriate, treat structural breathing problems

What do we assess during your consultation?
The nose is central to the face. We therefore assess not only the detail that concerns you, but also your profile, frontal view, skin thickness, cartilage, nasal breathing and expectations.
Wishes and proportions
We discuss exactly what you would like to change and which result is realistic within the proportions of your face.
Internal and external examination
The surgeon assesses the skin, bridge, tip, nasal wings, septum and—where relevant—the airway.
Personalised technique
You receive clear information about the proposed approach, scars, anaesthesia, recovery, limitations and possible risks.
The approach is chosen individually
Neither technique is automatically ‘better’. Your anatomy and the desired correction determine which approach gives the surgeon the best view and control.
Through the inside of the nose
The incisions are inside the nostrils and are not externally visible. This approach may be suitable for certain corrections of the bridge or tip.
With a small external incision
In addition to incisions inside the nose, a small incision is made in the strip of skin between the nostrils. This allows the surgeon to assess and reshape the structures precisely. The scar usually fades gradually.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
Preparation
Before surgery, we review the plan with you once more. The procedure is generally performed under general anaesthesia.
Correction
Bone and cartilage are carefully repositioned, refined or reinforced. Additional cartilage may sometimes be needed, for example from the septum or ear.
Protection
An external splint may be applied after surgery. Internal splints or packing are not necessary for every patient.
What can you expect?
Recovery varies according to the technique and the individual. The timeline below is indicative; always follow your surgeon’s personal instructions.
A blocked nose, pressure, swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal. Rest with your head elevated.
The splint and any non-dissolvable sutures are removed as planned. The first result becomes visible.
Many patients return to desk work after approximately 10 to 14 days. Only resume exercise and heavier activity after approval.
Residual swelling gradually subsides, especially at the nasal tip. The result therefore continues to refine for several months.
Possible risks
Every operation involves risks. During your consultation, the surgeon explains which risks are relevant to you and how complications are minimised.
The final shape can only be assessed once swelling has sufficiently subsided. Minor asymmetries may remain and an additional correction may occasionally be necessary.
- Bleeding, infection or delayed wound healing
- Temporary changes in sensation or prolonged swelling
- Visible or thickened scarring with an open technique
- Asymmetry, contour irregularity or a result that develops differently than expected
- Persistent or new nasal breathing problems
- Rarely: damage to or perforation of the nasal septum
- Possibility of revision surgery
Good to know
When will I feel presentable again?
Swelling and bruising are usually most noticeable during the first week. Many patients feel comfortable in social situations again after about 10 to 14 days, although residual swelling may remain visible for longer.
Is rhinoplasty very painful?
Most patients describe pressure, tightness and a blocked nose rather than severe pain. You will receive clear instructions about pain relief and care.
Can my breathing be improved at the same time?
Sometimes. If you have symptoms, the surgeon investigates whether a deviated septum or another structural narrowing is involved. Not every breathing problem can be resolved with the same operation; additional examination or advice may be necessary.
When can I exercise again?
Gentle movement is usually encouraged early. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and activities in which the nose could be hit are generally postponed for several weeks. Always follow your personal aftercare schedule.
Can I wear glasses after surgery?
Pressure on the healing nasal bridge must be avoided temporarily. The duration depends on the correction performed. Discuss the use of sunglasses in advance as well.
Is the result permanent?
The result of rhinoplasty is generally long-lasting. Like the rest of the face, the nose will continue to change naturally with age. The final result is only assessed once swelling has sufficiently subsided.
Which change is right for you?
Good rhinoplasty starts with listening, careful examination and an honest discussion of what is and is not achievable.
