Soften fine lines around the mouth
Fine vertical lines around the lips are not caused by smoking alone. Skin ageing, sun exposure and repeated mouth movements also contribute. An intensive Er:YAG laser treatment can make the skin around the mouth smoother and more even.
Why do lines develop around the mouth?
The skin around the lips is thin and constantly moving. Collagen and elastin decrease with age. Sun exposure, smoking, genetics and repeatedly pursing the lips can make the vertical lines deeper.
Laser treatment mainly improves skin quality and texture. If volume loss, a fading lip border or strong muscle activity also play a role, a combination treatment may be more suitable. We always assess this individually.
Controlled skin renewal
The Er:YAG laser removes very thin superficial layers of skin in a controlled way. During recovery, the skin produces new cells and collagen, refining the texture and softening fine lines.
Precise treatment
The energy is precisely directed at the skin around the mouth. We adjust the intensity to the depth of the lines and your skin type.
Renew the skin
Damaged superficial skin is removed. A smoother, more even layer of skin forms during healing.
Stimulate collagen
The thermal stimulus supports collagen formation and reorganisation, allowing improvement to continue after the initial recovery.

What happens during treatment?
Preparation
We assess your skin, discuss medication and medical history, and explain the expected improvement and recovery time. A numbing cream is applied for approximately 30 minutes beforehand.
Laser treatment
We cool the skin and treat the area around the mouth with the laser in a controlled way. Treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area and intensity.
Aftercare
Afterwards, we apply a soothing ointment. You receive clear instructions on cleansing, skincare, sun protection and follow-up.
What can you expect afterwards?
This is an intensive resurfacing treatment. Redness, swelling, a burning sensation, pinpoint bleeding and crusting can be part of normal recovery. Do not schedule treatment immediately before an important event.
Do not pick at crusts and follow your personalised aftercare instructions carefully. This helps reduce the risk of infection, pigment changes and scarring.
- First few daysThe skin may be red, swollen and weeping. Apply the recommended healing ointment several times a day to gently cleansed skin.
- Up to approximately 2 weeksThe skin peels and crusts may form. Do not scratch or pick. Only apply make-up once the skin has closed sufficiently.
- The following weeksA pink or red colour may remain visible for longer. Protect the skin carefully from sunlight every day with a high SPF.
- After 6 to 8 weeksAt your follow-up, we assess recovery and the initial result. The skin may continue to improve through collagen remodelling.
When do we postpone treatment?
Treatment is postponed in the event of an active cold sore, skin infection, open wounds or recent intense sun exposure. Always tell us about previous cold sores, pigmentation problems, abnormal scarring, pregnancy, medication and recent aesthetic treatments.
Important before your appointment
If you have previously had herpes around the mouth, laser treatment may trigger another outbreak. Preventive antiviral medication is sometimes advised. Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice: discuss it with us beforehand.

Good to know
Do I need to smoke to develop these lines?
No. Although they are commonly called smoker’s lines, they also develop due to natural skin ageing, sun exposure, genetics and repeated mouth movements.
How many treatments will I need?
Because this is an intensive treatment, one session may already produce noticeable improvement. For deeper lines or a more gradual treatment plan, an additional session or combination treatment may be discussed. Your skin response and result determine the next step.
Is the treatment painful?
We apply a numbing cream beforehand and cool the skin during treatment. You may still feel warmth, prickling or a burning sensation. Sensitivity varies by person and treatment intensity.
When will I see the result?
Once the skin has healed, it generally looks smoother and more even. Collagen production and remodelling continue, so the result can develop further over the following months.
Will the lines disappear completely?
Not necessarily. Superficial lines usually respond better than deep-set creases. The aim is visible softening and improved skin texture, not a guarantee of completely smooth skin.
Can I combine laser with fillers or another treatment?
Sometimes. Laser mainly improves skin quality, while fillers can restore targeted volume or support. The correct order and waiting time depend on your skin and previous treatments and are determined individually.
When can I go back into the sun?
Avoid direct sun during recovery and then use high broad-spectrum sun protection every day. As sun exposure increases the risk of pigment changes, we preferably schedule intensive laser treatments outside sunny periods.
