Symmastia is a rare condition where there is little to no visible separation between the breasts. The breasts may appear to merge across the chest, without a natural gap.
It can occur naturally, due to individual chest anatomy, or develop after breast augmentation when implants are placed too close to the midline.
How does it occur?
Possible causes include:
- A natural anatomical variation
- Over-dissection of tissue during breast augmentation
- Implants that are too large for the patient’s body
Why does it matter?
A natural breast appearance typically includes a subtle separation between the breasts. When this is lost, the result may appear less natural.

If certain wishes, such as larger implant sizes, could increase the risk of symmastia, we will always communicate this clearly and honestly. In such cases, we may recommend:
- a different implant size
- an adjusted surgical approach
- or an alternative treatment plan
